The Bite-Type Malocclusion Classification – An Extended Angle-Method: Is the New Classification Reliable?

For over a century, Edward Angle’s classification system has served as the foundational language of orthodontic diagnosis and inter-clinician communication.

While universally recognized for its simplicity, Angle’s traditional framework presents significant diagnostic limitations—primarily its strict reliance on first permanent molar relationships and its failure to systematically incorporate incisor positioning across Class I and Class III discrepancies.


Because anterior tooth relationships and sagittal incisal discrepancies fundamentally dictate aesthetic harmony, functional guidance, and biomechanical treatment mechanics, relying solely on molar interdigitation often fails to capture the true complexity of a malocclusion.

To address these diagnostic shortcomings without sacrificing the simplicity that made the original system ubiquitous, the Bite-Type classification was introduced as an extended Angle method.

By systematically integrating incisor relationships (overjet and overbite characteristics) into all three classical molar categories, this refined diagnostic system establishes nine distinct "Bite-Types" (I:0 through III:3).

Originally implemented as the standard diagnostic protocol at the University of Giessen, this classification provides clinicians with a substantially more comprehensive and nuanced baseline for orthodontic treatment planning.


This pivotal validation study by Hans Pancherz and Lars Bondemark critically investigates the diagnostic reliability and reproducibility of the Bite-Type classification against an established "Gold Standard."

Evaluating multi-operator assessments across dental casts, the authors demonstrate an overall high level of diagnostic accuracy (75–90% agreement), validating the system as a robust, reproducible, and clinically superior alternative to conventional Angle categorization.
