Squamous cell carcinoma, the most common oral malignancy, often presents a clinical diagnostic challenge to the dental practitioner, particularly in its early stages of development.
Visual inspection alone is not adequate to differentiate early oral cancer from benign lesions regardless of the expertise of the clinician. Brush biopsy and toluidine blue stain are used as an adjunct to the clinical examination of the suspected lesions.
